Fondant is wonderful to work with when it comes to cake decorating. No more flat cakes. They have to be 3D now. I had made Lightning McQueen Cars cake for my 2 year old grandson and now it was his sister’s turn. My daughter wanted a ladybug theme so I got out my Wilton egg pan and used half an egg for the ladybug cake.
I covered the cake with black fondant and then added the red fondant for the wings. Split Oreo cookies, worked great for the spots on the bug and licorice rope became the antennas and legs. I used a sheet cake for the base, created a flower out of cupcakes and set the ladybug on top of the flower. Decorating gel was used for grass blades and little tiny ladybugs were made from cherry candies decorated to look like bugs.
It was the hit of the party and granddaughter Zoey laughed and giggled with joy as she tore into one of the cupcakes.
