Coolest Lightning McQueen Cake

Since the mother of the birthday boy is a vegetarian, I made a homemade fondant using agar agar in place of the gelatin. I will say I still had a few agar agar lumps, so I don’t think the recipe is without issues. It is on Epicurious.

I didn’t want to wrap the whole Lighning McQueen cake in fondant since it doesn’t taste all that great, so I made the stickers in fondant and frosted the cake in buttercream. The cake is the Perfect Party Cake from Baking From My Home To Yours by Dorie Greenspan with her lemon buttercream frosting. Loved the frosting. The cake had issues with rising.

I used the Wilton car cake pan. No shaving – I just added a spoiler on the back made of cake scraps tooth picked on. I was evoking McQueen – it didn’t need to be exact. The fondant was like sugar PlayDoh and really easy to work with once I got it to the right consistency. I used food markers (the Wilton ones) to add the extra details seen.

My 3 year old nephew really loved his cake – it was pretty awesome. Note: the candles were placed by him – can you tell?
