Coolest Monkey Face Cake

I made a monkey face cake for my grandson’s 2nd birthday. I used 3 round cake pans, 1 for the face, 1 for the 2 bananas, and the last one for the monkey ears and muzzle.

The most difficult part was frosting the cut sides of the cake pieces. I discovered that tossing them in the freezer for at least an hour (longer if at all possible) made it easier to frost. I used one banana to hold his candle and the other to write his name. I did purchase gold cupcake gems but decided to use them only to highlight the ears and decided against doing the entire muzzle. Make sure that you place the ears on the side of the monkey’s face otherwise it will end up looking like a bear or a mouse.

I added cupcakes, frosted in 2 of his favorite colors and topped them with M&M’s for additional color, plus daughter invited more children. To get the color for the ears and muzzle I mixed chocolate and vanilla frosting. I decorated the platter with ferns from my yard to add additional texture.

Had a great time building this cake! I do plan on making him again.
