This Muppet Birthday Cake was made for my brother in law on his fortieth birthday. He’s a big fan of the Irish Times cryptic crossword and also of the Muppets. The toilet was added as a family joke. A lot of time is spent there completing the crossword!
All of the models are made from sugar paste. Animal’s fur and the fluffy toilet mat were created using a craft gun. The single strand of sugar paste was cut into very short pieces and glued to a base of paste. I use Squires edible glue. The contrasting tiles were individually cut to measure and then glued to the cake.
The cake is 8inch square Madeira, filled with vanilla butter cream and strawberry jam. The cake was crumb coated then both cake and board were covered with cream colored sugar paste. I use Sugarflair paste colors, Covapaste fondant and the cake is baked using unsalted butter and free range eggs.
The entire creation was edible but the birthday boy refused to allow the Muppets to be eaten! I imagine one of the kids ate the lavatory!
