Coolest Pirate Ship Birthday Cake

We made the Pirate Ship Birthday Cake out of sponge cake. The bottom part (the water) was yellow cake! After cooking the cakes and letting them cool, you take the sponge cake and cut off the end about an inch. We set that on top of the end and inserted tooth picks to help support it. That created the stern. To do the bow, just simply cut each side into a point. About mid-ship cut about a 2 inch notch to give it another level. We then took fondant and sculpted out the anhor, steering wheel, and port holes.

We also created fancy rails that were located at the stern and bow. They were supported by tootsie rolls. The cannons were also tootsie rolls. We made our own icing using powdered sugar, butter and heavy cream. We did that for the ships icing and the pretty blue ocean. When you level the yellow cake, save the cake top to create an island for more effect. The sails were made of construction papaer and said happy bday stuck in the cake with wooden skewers and topped with tootsie rolls. Then later made little flags with the number 5 (child’s age) on them and stuck them on top of tootsie rolls with tooth picks. The island was made with the brown icing sprinkled with green sprinkles and the palm tree was made of tootsie rolls and construction paper.
