Coolest Prince and Princess Cake

I made this crown and tiara on a cushion cake for my daughter who turns 10 on April 22nd and for my son who turns 5 on April 23.  So far I have been able to do a combined cake for them for the past 5 years, but I fear that this Prince and Princess cake may be the last as they grow older and want very different things.  Both the crown and tiara are  made of homemade marshmallow fondant.

I made them free formed over cardboard cans covered with wax paper (I will use parchment next time as I thought the wax paper trapped moisture and slowed the drying time).  Then covered them in pearl and gold luster dusts.  The cake is white almond cake filled with chocolate ganache (their favorite) which I carved out of two 9×9 square cakes.  I didn’t realize that Wilton makes a cushion pan…that would have made it a lot easier!!

I covered the bottom of the cushion upside down and then flipped it. I was sure that the fondant was going to peel right off when I flipped it so I let it rest for a little over an hour before I flipped and didn’t have any problems!  I used my diamond embossing sheet on the top and then used my veining tool to make it look puffier.  The cording and tassels brought it all together and my kiddos loved it!
