Coolest Spongebob Cake

My friends little boy had a Spongebob themed 1st birthday party and I was given the job of making a homemade Spongebob cake!

I had a couple of rough practices and soon came to realize that using rolled icing as opposed to buttercream looked a lot neater. I have never used this kind of icing before and it does take time to get used to but once you get the hang of rolling it out to your required size it becomes easier.

A good tip is to buy the icing in the colours you require rather than using food colouring. This saved me a lot of time and saved a lot of mess (the cake craft shop in the UK has many to choose from).

Once I had the base colours I rolled red icing and cut it to the shape of the belt and mouth and did the same with white icing for the eyes. I cut round black icing for the pupil of the eye and used blue writing icing around it and finished off by outlining everything with black writing icing which makes a huge difference to the final product.

For his nose I rolled a large piece of yellow icing and placed it between the eyes with a squashed ball of yellow icing for it to rest on. His arms, legs and shoes are simply molded icing and his belt is twisted licorice. The homemade Spongebob cake was a hit with kids and adults!
