Coolest Super Mario Cake

This cake was made for my son’s 7th birthday party. We looked at all the ones listed here and took ideas from several we liked and compiled them into one cake. I am not experienced with fondant so I wasn’t ready to tackle an entire cake of fondant. I used two 9″ rounds for the base and two 6″ rounds for the middle layers. I then used three Oreos each for the top layers held together with frosting between the cookies and iced.

I purchased the figures from eBay and they arrived quickly from China. On the bottom layers, I piped icing using a star tip and made several shades of green. The red dots were made with a small round tip. I used nutty bars cut in half and then halved again to stick on the cake. I bought pre-made fondant in the brown and rolled and cut to the size needed to place between the sections of nutty bar. I then piped the black icing around and added the question mark.

The candy used was chewy sweet tarts. The clouds were made from a larger star tip. I piped the red mushrooms on and smoothed the icing with a wet fingertip before going back and adding the eyes and dots.

The mountains on top were made of stacked Oreos and I thinly piped the faces on them. This homemade Super Mario cake was a fun cake to make and my son and his friends thought it was great!
