This is a swimming pool birthday cake that was ordered at our ice cream parlor. It’s a 13 x 9 inch vanilla ice cream cake filled with crushed Oreos and frosted with commercial whipped buttercream icing.
The customer said that her son (turning 8) had joined the swim team and wanted anything to do with swimming, water, oceans, dolphins, etc. She said she was leaving it up to me as I’d done cakes for her in the past and she trusted me!
This cake was ordered with less than 48 hours notice. The ice cream cake itself had to be in the mold overnight, leaving me one working day to complete this cake while waiting on other customers!
We already had all the cake decorating gels plus gummy bears, graham crackers and drink umbrellas at our shop, so a quick trip to CVS for Gummy Savers was all I needed.
The water is blue piping gel, the sand is crushed graham crackers, the swimmers are gummy bears, the lifesavers are…gummy lifesavers! For the towels, I cut graham crackers and striped them with piping gel.
I piped around the bottom of the cake with a star tip and then finished it with a little rainbow sprinkles.
If it wasn’t for this site, I would have been at a loss on how to decorate this cake. Thanks much to all the creative cake decorators here and to the people who run this site!
