I made this Tinkerbell Birthday Cake for my friend’s daughter’s 5th birthday party. Using boxed mixes, I made two 11 x 17 cakes in my jellyroll pan and I used an oven-safe bowl approximately 6” wide to bake the cake for the hill.
Once cooled, I positioned one of the 11×17 cakes on my serving tray and iced it with buttercream frosting dyed green. Then I put the second 11×17 cake on top to make a large 2-layer cake, and iced that on the top and sides. I also inverted the ‘hill’ cake, positioned it on the layer cake, and iced it.
Then I put the river, tree, flowers, grass, mushrooms, and fairies on the cake. Lastly, I used Twizzler’s Pull-n-Peel licorice to write the message on the front.
The night before I baked the cakes, I made all the decorations for it. The grass is shredded coconut that I dyed different colors with food coloring and a little bit of water, and then I spread it out on wax paper to let it dry out overnight. The flowers are made from candy melts and a store-bought mold – this was a very easy process. The tree is Rice Krispy treat that I shaped into a tree while it was still cooling.
Then I iced the top with pink buttercream icing and put Fruity Pebbles on it for the leaves. The bottom bark is semisweet chocolate chips melted and spread on the trunk. The mushroom caps are plum halves covered with melted candy melts and the stalks are bananas. The river is made of fondant. I used Popsicle sticks to secure the tree and mushrooms upright on the cake. The fairies were bought at a toy store.
This cake took a bit of preparation to make the flowers, tree, and mushroom caps, but once those things were ready, I put the whole thing together in about 30 minutes. It looks like a lot of work and it takes a good bit of time, but nothing here is really very difficult to do.
