Cool Homemade Transformers Cakes

I made this Transformers Cake for my son’s 4th birthday party. He loves Transformers. He likes to watch the 80’s cartoons we have on DVD, but also likes all the new toys that are out from the newer movies.

First, I make a sheet cake (half chocolate, half funfetti), and covered it with a steel blue buttercream icing. I got the blue color by mixing a lot of royal blue with a little black. I then baked a red velvet cake (for Optimus) and a lemon cake (for Bumblebee) each in a bread loaf baking dish. I carved each one out, covered with white buttercream, and decorated with homemade marshmallow fondant.

The “smoke stacks” on Optimus are just cereal straws wrapped in grey fondant (I think that was my son’s favorite part to eat!). I piped a circular “bed” of red icing on which to place the Autobot symbol (made of cut-out fondant pieces), and wrote out his name in the front.

This cake took quite a bit of time to complete, because of the different colors of fondant and the detail work (like the flames on Optimus and the Autobot symbol). I’m sure if I didn’t have my 5-month-old at home with me all day, I could have gotten it done a little quicker. Needless to say, I was up into the wee hours of the morning trying to get it done! But it was all worth it. We had a wonderful party and my son (and the rest of the kids and guests) loved his cake! (And the little finger swipes in the very front of the cake just add to it!)

  1. Your cake is awesome. I am looking for ideas for my son’s transformer cake. How long did you have to bake the cakes in the bread loaf pans?? Thanks for sharing this.
