Homemade 1st Birthday Cake

Homemade 1st Birthday Cake

This was a homemade 1st birthday cake that was made for my baby's 1st birthday. It turned out awesome; I almost cried when I had to cut it!

First, I used 1 package of cake and baked it in 2 round pans. I frosted in between and cut them down a bit. Second, I baked another box of cake in a 9x13 Pyrex and cut out 3 squares for the "gifts". I frosted each one separately (I decorated it all later). I placed the 3 square cakes so that they could hold most of the weight of the top round cake. Under the round cake in the bottom I placed a kitchen accessory to support it. (This can't be seen at all.)

Once they were all placed, I decorated! Each gift has 2 small ribbons on it; then I added the candy decoration, and last the ribbon bow. Each gift has its own style of decoration. The round cake has only 2 strips of wide brown ribbon around it and blue-colored frosting circles. All of the ribbon stayed well with dabs of frosting.

The topper is one of those baby blankets with a stuffed animal on the end. It was so cute with this topper as opposed to a wax candle or something else.

Homemade 1st Birthday Cake

Homemade 1st Birthday Cake

This 1st Birthday Cake was really easy to make. First I made 2 simple sponge cakes in a 43mx28cm silicone loaf pan. Make sure you measure the ingredients exactly so they are the same height. I added a couple of tablespoons of warm water to the mixture to make it more moist.

Once they had cooled down I wrapped them in cling film and put them in the fridge. Once cold, I cut the end off one of the cakes and used this bit as the top part of the “one”. I also cut the cakes in half height wise to add the buttercream icing into later. I also use a bit of the icing to bind the difference pieces together.

I used buttercream icing all over coloured with green food colouring. I then roughed up the surface with a fork so it looked like grass. I decorated it with some Waybuloo figures I had bought as my daughter loves the programme and could keep them as a present afterwards. I also decorated the cake with sugar flowers. You can use whatever decorations you like.

To complement the cake I made little cupcakes using the same sponge mixture and buttercream icing coloured in green, yellow or pink.

1st Bday

1st Bday

I made this cake for my daughters 1st birthday. She wasn't really into any "characters" yet, so we went with the theme of the #1 and pink and blue. I figured something simple would work great! I just used a #1 shaped Wilton cake pan and then decorated in the colors of Butter cream Icing i liked. The Blue Flowers are made of Royal Icing.(I acutally bought the flowers from a small local cake shop since I ran out of time to make them myself) The actual cake was confetti just to brighten it up when cut. This was the first cake I have ever made on my own so I am glad it turned out as well as it did! This is a smaller cake pan though, so If you know you are having a big party or a lot of cake eaters...I would recommend making matching color cupcakes like I did to satisfy the demand ! Over all, with the exception of a few mistakes, (I am a perfectionist) I was happy with how my little girls cake turned out!
