Homemade Cat Birthday Cake

My daughter wanted a Homemade Cat Birthday Cake for her birthday and of course I wanted to do something different than the usual cat pan cake. I followed some ideas from the other coolest cat cakes and just went for it.

I used chocolate pound cake and made 3 9in round cakes: 1 of those I cut in 1/2 and stood them up side by side, the other 2 round cakes I used for free hand carving out the legs, ears and tail. For the head I used the top pan from the big top cupcake (you may have seen this on TV). I thought the body should sit up a little higher so I cut a piece to fit underneath the halved cake.

I froze everything and then crumb coated it, froze it again before doing the final frosting on it. I used toothpicks to hold the ears on and 2 apple sticks (for carmelapples) to hold the head in place. These worked perfectly and I didn't have any parts falling off! I used pink fondant for the inside of the ears, which I put on before frosting it w/tip 233 for the fur. I also used pink fondant for the nose and green fondant for the eyes then I outlined the eyes w/black frosting and piped the mouth w/black frosting.

I think if I were to make this again I'd put the eyes on first before frosting so they'd look more attached to the face. I forgot to buy something for the whiskers so I had to use what I could find at the local small town store. I came up with silver, 2 in eye pins (I think they're used for beading?), which I stuck the "eye" end into the cake so it wouldn't be seen.

I think the cake turned out for my 1st 3D cake and my daughter was VERY happy.

This is amazing Jen. I mean amazing. I love the color and I can see why your daughter loved it. It's more 3D than I was imagining (to mean way more detailed etc.) Thanks for letting everyone know where to see a picture of it. I'm going to try and add a clickable link in the guestbook at the article.

I see html is discouraged here, so if anyone wants the recipe for only the cake part they can search chocolate pound cake + squidoo.

Thanks again Jen for checking back in and letting everyone know how it turned out.

Wonderful cat cake!! Just a thought: you can also use uncooked spaghetti for the whiskers. I have a purple guitar on this site that I did and I actually painted spaghetti silver to use as the guitar strings. You did an awesome job on this cake!

Thank you!

Thanks for your pictures and creativity! I made this for my daughter's 3rd birthday and it was a hit.

Crumb coat means to cover w/a base frosting so you don't see the crumbs in your top coat of frosting:)

WONDERFUL Idea Deb!!! Why didn't I think of that at the time?! ha!

RQueen, glad it worked out for you and everyone enjoyed it! I had a lot of fun making it!
