Coolest Guitar Birthday Cake

This guitar cake was a last minute request from a very close friend who had bought her daughter a guitar for her birthday and wanted a cake to match and so a challenge I couldn’t resist. I’m new to cake decorating and this was my first carved cake.

I made a basic sponge cake mix and froze it. The next day after a little defrosting I was able to slice and fill with buttercream before carving using a paper template I had prepared previously. I covered the whole thing in buttercream and chilled whilst I prepared the fondant I would need. When chilled I covered the body of the guitar with a light brown (Sugarflair autumn leaf colouring) then covered the neck of the guitar with black ready made fondant (I always use ready made black as I find it difficult to get pure black when mixing myself). I measured the depth of the cake and cut 2 long strips of fondant out of a dark brown fondant (sugarflair – chestnut). I rolled these up to help make it easier to apply them to the edge of the cake. A little water around the edges of the cake made it easier for this to stick.

Now for the fun bit. I used royal icing to add the struts of the guitar and used the gold wire I usually use for adding shooting stars or butterflies to cakes as makeshift strings. Other details I had previously made out of sugarpaste. Final details were added on using a fine paintbrush and sugarflair colours.

The cake was as like as the bought one as I could do. My friend was really chuffed – I hope you like it too.
