I made this cake for my dad’s 60th birthday. I searched this site for cowboy birthday cakes and this is what I made. The brim is rolled fondant cut to fit over the brim of an overturned cowboy hat covered in wax paper and left to dry for two days. The top part is an oval shaped cake pan two high, and I put a sausage like roll of fondant on the top to create the dip on the top of the hat. I then covered the cake with fondant, added a hat band made from fondant and placed it onto the dried brim.
I used natural white cake that was baked in an oven safe glass bowl. Then I used a thin layer of buttercream frosting before I applied the fondant. I used foil rolled up and covered in a paper towel to shape the fondant how I wanted it. Then I let the rim of my hat set over night to get hard.
I made everything the night before so I wouldn’t have to worry about it the day of my son’s birthday party!

These are what is called pull-apart-cakes which are just cupcakes stuck side by side in any shape and iced and decorated like you would a cake minus the sides. I searched clipart for the pictures I wanted. After I found the right pictures I shaped the cupcakes and iced with white icing.
I then took a toothpick and traced the outline of my work. I used blue color spray for the blue parts. I couldn’t find brown spray so I tinted my icing brown and some black for the outline. With the four cupcakes I had left I wrote the child’s name in a rope patterned type writing going down. These were fairly easy designs of cowboy birthday cakes and a lot of fun to make.
I made this cake for a western evening at my local dance club. As with most of the cakes that I make; we raffled it off and raised money for our club funds. I covered the board with a thin layer of fondant and allowed this to dry. Next I rolled out a shape to serve as a brim for the hat (cut a big hole in it) and put this onto the iced board. I curled the edge of the brim and allowed it to dry.
The cake is basic Madeira. I made the cake in an oval Pyrex dish…then shaped it by using off cuts of cake and soft fondant (as I have said before…frozen cake is easier to handle). The whole cake was covered in butter icing, before covering in light brown fondant. I twisted two colours to make the braid and added a couple of feathers for effect., Happy baking girls!
We started with a 12X2 round cake pan. We sliced the cake in half and filled it. We covered the cake in chocolate buttercream frosting. We did a shell border along bottom of cake. We used Wilton star cutters to make the stars. We colored white fondant pink and yellow. We used various size stars to decorate around the cake.
The cowgirl hat was made using a rice crispy treat. We followed the microwave directions on the Rice Crispy box. Once the treat was moldable we shaped it into the form of a cowgirl hat. We used toothpicks to help form the brim. Once the hat was a bit hardened (about 4-5 hours). The hat was then placed on top of the cake.
We covered the rice crispy treat hat with white butter cream frosting using tip 16. This cake was so much fun to make and it was a hit at the party. We were asked where we purchased it. We served it with pink chocolate boots made from a chocolate mold. They loved it.
I just baked a large sheet cake and decorated it. For the hat, I baked it out of a small mixing bowl. I then covered it with icing and put it in the freezer (because it is easier to trim icing when cold). I made small cuts into the cake, trying to make it look like a cowboy hat would.
I colored Fondant, rolled it out, and placed it onto the cake, trying to push it into the grooves that I had cut out. I then placed a smooth piece of fondant underneath the other piece. I trimmed it to the size that I needed.
Here is the hard part: I tried to roll the sides up into a brim shape, which was easy enough, but trying to get them to stay was tricky. I rolled them up, and then rolled up plastic wrap into a long shape. I placed that into the rolled up fondant, and used a small toothpick to hold it into place. It took awhile in the freezer, but it held. I then put a sour straw piece of candy around the top of the brim for the band of the hat.
My son liked it so that is all that mattered.
I created this wild west cowgirl hat cake for my friend’s little girl. I took her wild west cowgirl hat and made an exact replica of it. I was amazed at how it turned out!
The brim of the wild west hat was made with Wilton ‘s rolled fondant. I molded it into the shape I wanted and let it form overnight. I placed cups beneath the sides to hold it’s shape. The "hat" part was baked with a round bowl (white cake mix) and I hand-carved the indentions on the top and sides with a serrated knife.
It took quite a long time to get the brim just right, but the result was worth it!
