My husband lived in France for two years and I thought it would be fun to try making this traditional Christmas cake. It is basically like making a jellyroll.
I made a spongy chocolate cake with an almond mousse filling. I cut one end at an angle and put it on top to look like a knot from a branch. I frosted it with chocolate frosting and used a fork to create the bark look. I used marzipan to make the decorations.

This was my first attempt at a Yule log and I combined several different recipes and Christmas cake ideas. I used a chocolate roll cake with whipped cream filling and cut one end at an angle to make the branch. I frosted with a butter cream chocolate frosting. I made meringue mushrooms and then harvested some small yew branches (not edible) and added some Red Hots to look like berries.

My annual Christmas treat, is the French Yule log cake called ‘Buche De Noel”. I make a different version of this every Christmas.
Chocolate hazelnut ganache filling – frosted with milk chocolate ganache. Surrounded by meringue mushrooms – some against a chocolate ‘piece of bark’. Tinted cream cheese frosting holly and leaves (done with a toothpick as I couldn’t find my pastry bags at that time!) Powdered sugar snow.
