Cool Quilters Cake

I made this  cool Quilters cake for my mother-in-law. I knew I wanted to incorporate pink as much as possible (she is a breast cancer survivor). She LOVES to quilt and even holds classes on it. Her idea of a fun time is driving all over Southern California looking for “fat quarters”.

The cake is made from pound cake and is covered by fondant. I created the Singer sewing machine, the quilt, scissors and the bobbins out of fondant also. The sides I made look like it was quilted.  The flowers on the bottom are also cut of from fondant. The Singer sewing machine has gold dust on it that is mixed with water to create the golden look on a black machine (when I think of a sewing machine, this is how I have always pictured it).

I have 2 favorite things about this cake, the sewing machine and also the  flowers as the border on the bottom of the cake. For the border of the cake I have always used just another piece of flat fondant. I am glad that I did the flowers. It gave it a much better look I believe. My mother-in-law loved the cake!!
