Coolest 3D Monkey Cake

I was asked by a friend of a friend if I could make a 3D monkey cake. I ummed and ahh’d about how I would create it. For a few nights I woke up with different ideas as to how I could make this happen. The preference was chocolate cake, so I baked a cake in a 2 litre pudding basin and a 4″ round ball tin. When they were baked I looked at the cakes still wondering how I would put it together?? Once I made a start, it all seemed to come together nicely.

I shaped the body and covered it in chocolate buttercream and then with chocolate sugarpaste, then put a dowel through the body and put the ball cake on for the head. Then the fun began….I covered the head in chocolate paste and added the features, ears, muzzle, eyes etc. using various colours of fondant icing until it looked like a monkey! The arms and legs are purely sugarpaste and the banana was added – mainly to give some support to the arms.

Anyway – I was really pleased with the result and most importantly, so was the friend of a friend!! And it tasted good!
