This Flip Flops Cake Design was my first attempt at cake decorating in about 12 years. I wanted to surprise my daughter for her 13th birthday so I started looking for ideas on line. I didn’t even have a theme, but I ran across a pattern for this flip flops cake on the Wilton website and thought it would be cute for a 13 year old girl.
I make a chocolate cake from scratch and then carved it using the pattern. I tinted some buttercream icing teal and then came the hard part because I didn’t know about crumb coating at that time. After some extreme frustration, I put the cakes in the freezer for about 30 minutes and then managed to get them iced relatively well.
For decorating, I used fruit roll ups for the “rubber” tops and silk daisies to make them cute. I put skittles around the “sole” of the shoes.
