Coolest Garden Bug Birthday Cupcakes and Cake

I made these garden bug birthday cupcakes and cake for my grand daughter’s 3rd birthday. The theme was flowers and garden bugs. It was a white vanilla cake, lightly frosted in vanilla butter cream and covered with fondant (blue for the sky and green for the garden). I used a flower biscuit cutter to cut the clouds out of white fondant, then cut it in half – this gave the perfect cloud shape.

For the grass, I rolled small balls out of green fondant and then pressed it through a garlic press. The bumble bees, flowers, ladybugs, worms, butterflies and snails were all made out of fondant. I made a bigger bumble bee for the top cake (with pink shoes) and made it look like she is sleeping against the “3”. For the antennae/feelers of the bugs, I used flower pollen sticks, bought from the store. I also made the cupcakes to go with the cake – all topped with flowers and bugs.

Needless to say, nobody wanted to eat it! They kept it as souvenirs.

  1. Love the originality of the whole theme and the detail that went into the making of these cakes. As it was made for a little girl I find the pastel colors to be spot on! The cakes looks fresh and not overhandled and scream :’Eat me!’
