Coolest Ladybug Cake

I decided to go with a ladybug theme for our daughter’s 2nd birthday. I used the Wilton soccer ball pan for the body of the ladybug and the half ball pan for the head and the mini bugs. I baked a coconut cake from scratch and then made fondant.

Once the fondant was made I coloured it red, black and white. I used an entire Wilton gel container for the red and got the no taste red and an entire one for the black. Make sure to have plenty of Crisco on hand! I used a shot glass to cut out the black dots and black pipe cleaners for the antennae. I cut little white and black fondant circles for the eyes and used the back of a knife to draw a line down the body to look like wings.

The grass is made from shredded coconut with green food colouring. The fondant was really easy to make, just VERY messy! 2lbs of mini marshmallows with 3 tablespoons of water and in the microwave for 2 mins. I had to put Crisco all over the bench and my hands and then kneaded in a 2lb bag of powdered sugar.

I made 2 lots of fondant this way. One was totally red and I split the second batch into white and black. It took a lot of time but was easy. Just fiddly and messy. Our daughter absolutely loved this Ladybug Cake!
