Coolest Mario Bros Cake

For my son’s 5th birthday, he wanted a Mario Brothers Birthday Party. There were no decorations or anything at the store, so we came up with everything ourselves. I Googled a few options and found lots of great ideas for a Mario Bros cake, but nothing I felt I could replicate on my own. We finally decided on a “5 Up” mushroom from the video games.

I used a box mix to create two 9″ round cakes. I made a large mushroom out of cardboard and used that to shape each cake. I put a layer of buttercream between them and then used green gel dye to color a portion of the frosting. I iced the mushroom with the spots first and then filled it in with the green. I iced the base of the mushroom and then added the black details.

Everyone loved it and thought it was a great idea! My son was more than happy with it.

  1. Thanks for your idea. I am going to use it for my sons 6th birthday. I have been searching everywhere for a good Nintendo themed cake and couldn’t find anything that I could do until I found your mushroom idea. Thanks Again!

  3. I like your mushroom idea. My daughter will be 4 in May, and it’s hard to find any Mario themes. She really loves the Mushroom characters, and I want to make her Toadette, the pink Mushroom girl. I may use your idea, and then add some cut cake pieces for her side pigtails. Thanks, and great job on your cake!

  4. Very Cute Cake!

Is it two 9″ cakes stacked on top of each other and shaped into a mushroom, or is it two 9″ cakes next to each other? Please let me know. Thanks!!

    Great idea!
