Coolest Sock Basket 40th Birthday Cake

I was asked to make a cake in the shape of a basket filled with socks as a joke for someone’s 40th birthday celebration. I started making the socks a few days prior. I used a gumpaste/fondant mixture. I colored some of the mixture with a few colors. I cut out some mini flowers out of the colored fondant. I set them aside to dry.

I made two twists for handles, I placed them in a half moon shape to dry. I also painted them with bronze shimmer dust. I cut out a bunch of sock shapes and scrunched them up I let them dry for a few days. I painted designs on them with a paint brush and some gel food color. I let them dry. I baked three 14 inch half chocolate and half classic yellow cakes. I stacked them and filled them with strawberry filling.

I frosted the Sock Basket 40th Birthday Cake with white buttercream. I colored some of the icing a pale brown. I began piping a basket weave on the cake with a number 10 tip. Once that was complete I piped the top and bottom border and I arranged the socks on top of the cake. I then painted the basket weave with some bronze pearl dust to make it look like wood. I did the top and bottom border also.

I then placed some of the flowers around the cake and I placed one of the socks draping over the side of the cake. I hand painted with violet food coloring, Happy 40th on the sock hanging over the edge. I sprinkled the whole cake with white cake sparkles to give it a sparkle. Hope she liked it!

  1. Oh my. I thought this was a basket of real socks. That is the most amazing cake I’ve ever seen. This goes beyond cake making. Does the baker work for Charm City?
