Cool Homemade Sea Turtle Birthday Cake with Turtle Eggs

This Turtle Birthday Cake was made for a friend’s birthday who loves Turtles.

I used a Pyrex bowel to bake the shell part of the turtle (but didn’t fill to the top!). I then baked a separate tray of cake which I cut up when cool into the 4 legs and head. (I used a paper stencil to make sure legs were same size). I then placed all the parts together in the right position and covered with roll out icing.

I painted the shell with food colouring, and used an icing pen to mark out the pattern to ensure the colours wouldn’t run into each other. I then stuck on broken up chocolate buttons with melted chocolate for the scales on the legs and covered the head with chocolate fudge sauce and used the buttons in the same way.

The turtle eggs were made from balls of icing and the sand is brown sugar.

  1. I’m going to try to replicate this cake for my son’s birthday. Questions: How big a Pyrex bowl did you use? Also, can you explain more how you did the frosting without having it all run together?
