This is a cake that I made for my husband’s work. They were having some sort of ceremony and needed me to make them a cake. It is a basic cookie cake with the work logo on it. When they received this cake it was put on a sort of display. They refused to cut into it until everyone saw it.
The frosting is a buttercream recipe that I make each time I bake. I tinted the frosting accordingly and then use the writing tip and star tips. I know how to decorate a cake because I have made something similar.

This is just a basic cookie cake recipe that I made and then I decorated the cake with a star tip and writing tip all around to create my husband’s work logo and put the appropriately matched Air Force rank on both sides. I used the writing tip to fill in the logo for the most part and decorated the outside with a star tip.
The cake is easy but how to decorate a cake is tedious and since I use a frosting from scratch this takes lots of time. Despite the time that it takes the reaction is very rewarding. I have made several different cakes with this particular logo on it and the requests have not stopped!
This is actually a giant chocolate chip cookie (16″ diameter). My husband is in the United States Marine Corps so I wanted to attempt to make the Eagle Globe and Anchor Marine Corps logo for a party we were having. It turned out really well. The EGA is made of Fondant which I have just started to use as a medium. The rest is buttercream. If you haven’t made a giant cookie before I would recommend it! Every party I make one for, they go over 10 times better than a cake. I mean you can be picky about how to decorate a cake, but who doesn’t love chocolate chip cookies?
Here is the recipe I use and it is delicious: 1 cup butter softened, 1/2 cup sugar, 2/3 cup brown sugar packed, 2 large eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 cups flour (plus 4 Tablespoons), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon cream of tartar, 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, 1 cup walnuts coarsely chopped (I omit this and add an extra 1/2 cup chocolate chips). Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. (My hint: make sure not to MELT butter just soften it). Add eggs and vanilla mix well. Mix the flour, salt, baking soda and cream of tartar in another bowl. Add the dry ingredients to the batter and mix until well blended. Stir in the chocolate chips. Spread into a pizza pan or I use a 16″ Cake pan that works great. Bake 20 minutes (I usually bake it 18 so it is really soft). When cool decorate!
I love making giant cookies because the edges if you trim the crispy part off you can experiment with different borders on the side of the cookie and the top edge. It’s a heck of a lot easier to ice smooth too! Happy baking!
My Sunday school class was having a welcome home party for one of our friends that is in the Marines and was serving in Iraq. I thought it would be nice to have a cake with the Marines logo on it. As you see from the birthday cake picture, I took a small marines flag and enlarged it. I then made a template and traced it onto the cake. This cake was very time consuming, but it was well worth it. Our friend absolutely loved it!
