Coolest U.S. Air Force F-35 Cake

I have been decorating cakes for several years, usually for family and friends. A friend asked if I could make a coolest U.S. Air Force F-35 cake for a welcome home party she was having for her son who was home on leave from the U.S. Air Force.

Coolest U.S. Air Force F-35 Cake

I have been decorating cakes for several years, usually for family and friends. A friend asked if I could make a U.S. Air Force F-35 cake for a welcome home party she was having for her son who was home on leave from the U.S. Air Force. He is training to maintain and repair F-35 fight jets. She wanted his rank, the U.S. Air Force logo and motto, and Fly-Fight-Win, on the cake. I had about a month to plan and had the freedom to design whatever I wanted  to do.

I started with two cakes, an 18" x 12" sheet cake and a 12" x 8" sheet cake. The bottom is half yellow and half chocolate cake made from box cake mix. The jet is yellow cake, also made from a box cake mix.

I used Pillsbury container icing, tinted with Wilton icing coloring to decorate the cake. Fondant looks good, but I think it tastes terrible.

I crumb coated the bottom cake with a thin layer of white icing before adding a layer of sky blue icing.

Making the Jet

  • I started the jet cake, using a food color marker.
  • I drew the shape of the jet using a photo from the internet as a guide.
  • I cut out the jet and used a piece of the trimming to make the cockpit canopy.
  • After crumb coating the jet I covered it with gray icing using the Wilton #150 flat icing tip.
  • I then added the U.S. Air Force symbol and lettering using a #2 round tip.
  • The tail wings are made from royal icing tinted black with yellow lightning bolts.

Assembling the Cake and Adding Finishing Touches

  • I placed the jet on the base cake and used the #32 star tip to make clouds round the base of it.
  • I drew the U.S. Air Force logo, rank insignia and motto using the #3 round tip.
  • I trimmed the edge of the cake with blue and white stars using the #224 star tip and the base of the cake with the #32 star tip.

Everybody at the party loved the cake especially the proud U.S. Air Force Mom and Dad. This cake was challenging but fun to make and was an honor for me to do for a young man bravely serving our country.
