Coolest Building Block Birthday Cake

My step-sister asked me to make a cake for her youngest son who’s turning one. I had the idea of the building blocks so I spent days looking at pictures of how I wanted to do it. Then I came across pictures of fondant animals and thought that would look cute on it too, especially with little party hats.

I started with making the animals. I used homemade marshmallow fondant and took 3 hours to do the animals just from looking at pictures. I then waited til the day before to make the cakes. I used 3 box cakes to make the whole cake. I cut them and frosted them with homemade butter cream frosting and stacked them on cake boards and tried to make them all the same size (which was pretty hard, lol). And then I put the cakes in the freezer so they would be easier to handle.

I then made all the decorations out of the same fondant used for the animals. I waited til the next day to put all the decorations on. I had a lot of fun making this cake (besides my feet hurting from being in the kitchen all day, lol). It was a little more difficult than I had planned and for a while I thought I had been a little to ambitious but it worked out really good and everyone loved it, especially the little guy.
