I made this John Deere Tractor Cake for a co-worker and I used the same idea that I found on this website. The tractor alone wasn't enough cake for the party so I added the trailer and hay bales.
I used the plastic tractor pan that I purchased from my local cake decorating shop and I made a 1/2 sheet cake to cut the trailer, tires, and hay bales. I believe the other lady that made this cake on the site said she should have used cupcakes instead of cutting circles from the sheet cake - I should have listened!
I iced everything in buttercream and finished the tractor with the star tip.
My Dad John, collects tractors, toy and real. They are his life. I was asked to create a John Deere Tractor cake for his 71st birthday. I included my memory of him and I as a child with him on the tractor.
I used gumpaste, fondant, buttercream with a yellow cake dyed green and yellow for the 4 layers. Tractor and accessories all done by hand. I never went to school to bake or had any professional training. I was very happy with the end results, although very time consuming to create with such details. I hope you enjoy seeing it.
Like many others, I got my ideas from this website for a John Deere Tractor Cake. The cake is colored in fondant and I crushed graham crackers to use as the dirt. The hay stacks are Rice Krispie treats.
I used my children's foam blocks covered in foil as the raised support under the cardboard that I cut out in the shape of the tractor and trailer.
I made this for my son's 4th birthday. The detail on the tractor cake was done with colored chocolate (white and milk chocolate). For the hay bales I cut squares of cake, frosted them yellow and rolled them in browned coconut. I think I got that idea from this website :)
I wish I had thought more about how to connect the tractor and the wagon. I had to wing it at the last minute with the "male" piece of a wooden train set and a broken necklace.
My son loves all sorts of trucks. Last year he requested John Deere. I used a Wilton 1/2 sheet cake pan. Colored frosting brown and green and made a farm. added some plastic John Deere tractors and he loved it. This year he wants backhoes.
