The top portion was created in a 9x13 cake pan. I freehanded a drawing from other Nemo cakes on this site. Cut the shape to fit and pieced together. Frosted orange and added white and black piping and used brown M&M's for the eyes.
The bottom portion was prepared with two boxes of cake mix in a sheet cake pan, frosted blue crushed graham crackers were added for the ocean floor and gummy worms were used for the seaweed.

We had an underwater themed birthday party for our son's second birthday and got some ideas for Nemo cakes from this site. I hadn't used fondant before so I didn't want to try coloring it myself. I just bought the colored fondant from the craft store. I'm not much of a sculptor so I found Nemo sand toys at the store and washed and used the Nemo sand mold to make the cake topper. I sprayed it with cooking spray, rolled out orange fondant very thinly and fit and pressed it into the mold. I filled the rest with less expensive white fondant to help it hold its shape but I think I would use pieces of cake pressed into the mold next time - it used up a lot of fondant! Then I flipped it over and it came right out.
I used a bit of white fondant for the eyes and stripes and a black edible food marker for the black details. For the seaweed I cut shapes out of some rolled green fondant and pressed different colors of fondant into shell-shaped candy molds for the shells on the sides (again using cooking spray.) I also cut the letters out of fondant using mini letter cutters. For the sand I used crushed graham crackers and the stars were purchased cake sprinkles from a craft store. The cake itself was actually ordered from the bakery with a plain blue airbrushed color so that I could focus on all the decorating.
I made all the pieces ahead of time so on the day of the party it only took me about 15-20 minutes to put it all together. I had so much fun making this cake and would definitely work with fondant again.

This is a 12x18 two layer cake for the base that I made to look like the ocean. The Nemo body is made from the Wilton football pan (two put together on their sides). The fins are made from sugar cookie dough. I thought making Nemo cakes would be easy but even though this was a fun, it was difficult and time consuming.
| I froze the football cakes and carved the face to shape. I had a little trouble getting the fins to stay in place without splitting the two football cakes apart. I had to use a lot of wooden dowel rods and toothpicks. All of the icing is buttercream. I got the idea for this cake from many other Nemos on this site and used the ones that I thought would work best for me. | ![]() |
