After searching through many cake decorating sites, I came up with this Cute Monster Cake Idea for my little boy’s first birthday. We call him “Our Little Monster”, so it was perfect. This was my first time making or using fondant. I have always thought fondant cakes were so beautiful and finished looking, but was afraid to try it myself. I was so surprised at how easy it was. I had so much fun!
The monsters are all 100% fondant. They were so much fun to create! I just molded them just like I would modeling clay. I placed cotton balls under their arms to make them dry properly. The cake was coated with a thin layer of buttercream before covering with fondant. This posting is meant to be an encouragement to all of you out there who have been afraid to tackle fondant.
I can not express how much fun it was and how proud I was of myself with the finished product.

Great Job! What a beautiful monster cake. I too use fondant, doesn’t taste the greatest, but you sure get a nice canvas to work on, and your cake sure shows it.
