My dad was turning 60. He is a fencer by trade. I wanted to do something special for him as a cake. I had a friend introduce me to modeling paste (Fondant and Gum Tragacanth) and after I started to have a play around with it and realized what I could do, the idea for the post and rail fence came up as he had just finished a job doing a fence like this. The thing I wanted the most on the cake was the hammer, and his dirty old lunch box and flask! Everyday he goes to work with these things.
The dirt is coloured fondant that I let go dry over night. I then used a small grater to grate it up to get the mud look. The old gate I cut using a scalpel then scratched and holed it to get the rustic look. I then dusted it with dusting colors and put a small amount of green on it to look like moss. The gravel is also modeling paste that my 5 yr old son helped me roll.
The Homemade Mens Birthday Cake was a huge hit.
