Coolest Pirate Ship Cake

I used 2 boxes of cake mix to make this Pirate Ship Cake and made 2 9×13 cakes (chocolate!). For the base layer I cut angled corners off the front to make bow of boat and slightly rounded stern corners.

I used second cake to make an upper layer on bow to give extra dimension. I cut same pointed shape for front, then rounded out across width (basically a triangle shape with 1 rounded edge.

For stern, I just cut about 3″ and used same width dimensions. This allowed the bow and stern to be raised a little and have a lower deck area.

I frosted with store bought chocolate fudge frosting and made lines with a toothpick to make wood boards.

I used pretzels to make railings, lifesavers on sides and “sparkler” candles sticking out through those (makes a cool sparkler look when lit). I decorated with various gold covered candies (Nestle treasures are good) and some toy pieces from my son’s toys pirate ship (i.e. pirates with swords, treasure chest, fake gold coins, flags on masts).

I made the masts out of white card stock paper and colored the red stripes with a marker. I poked shishkabob skewers through those and put into cake. I used blue finger jello in cut up pieces to decorate around the boat for water.

We happened to be vacationing on a houseboat at the time and fit with the theme – my kids also dressed up as pirates to complete the look! I made a small treasure chest cake out of the remaining cake left over.
