Coolest Pirate Ship Cake

I looked up several pirate ship cakes for my son’s 5th Birthday and decided to kind of use ideas from several cakes I found.

I baked two Wilton Recipe butter cakes ( http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Butter-Cake ) in 11×15 pan then froze. The ship had a flat back with a curved front to a point then added a couple of levels.

I tried to make a brown frosting using a Wilton color, but it just looked more green than brown, so I frosted it with the ugly color first (can’t just waste it!), then coated again with Chocolate frosting. Then with a toothpick I carved out wood planks and grain. It took a while but made a nice effect.

I then used Tootsie Rolls to make railing and whoppers and Rollos for ship accessories.

I bought a pirate flag at a party store and printed off “Happy Birthday Tyler” in an Old English font and printed it on antique paper and cut to make sails. Just put it on a couple of skewers and you got some sails!

I bought some toy pirate coins for the party and decided to dab some frosting on the back and set them on both sides of the ship. The cannons are the Pepperidge Farm Pirouette cookies and a nutty bar was the plank. Put that all on a cake platter then spread a thin layer of blue frosting for water and bring your spreader straight up to give the wave effect.
