This is a cake I made for a friend for her neice's baby shower. I rolled each diaper as you see on most of the rolled cakes they are the Huggies Pure and Natural they are so soft and hypoallergenic (The only problem with these is they are printed on both sides) there is 3 layers of them on the bottom 2 on the second and 1 on the top. I then covered them in yellow tissue paper for the "icing"( the easiest way to do this is to cut a circle a bit bigger then the top of the tier and place it on top place a rubber band around the sides of the tier holding the tissue paper then gently pull so it is snug. Then fold tissue paper to the height of the sides and wrap around and attach the ends together with double stick tape. Then wrap ribbon around the middle of each tier and attach with double stick tape. I then added clear shred to the tiers just to add some fun to it. There is a hooded towel,3 wash cloths,a brush and comb set, and nail clippers in side. For the top I found a cute bear that glows when you push its paw, a baby shower favor box that looks like a block filled with sample bath products and a pacifer topped with a bow and hugged by the bear.2 ducks adorn the front on either side of the bow. I wrapped it in clear cellophane and closed it with a bow and curling ribbon in pale pink, blue, green, and yellow.
I was supposed to make a real edible cake for a baby shower so I was searching to get ideas. Somehow I ended up on this site. Well I never got to do the cake since the girl went into labor the day before her shower. An old friend send me an invitation that she was having a shower this month and decided that I would turn the edible cake into a usable one.
Since I have five kids of my own and on a tight budget I went out and bought two size one mega packs at wall-mart for about five bucks per bag. I had help tying the diapers since I have two older kids. I got a couple of baking pans and filled them up with the diapers and then tied them up with the ribbons I already had. The rest of the stuff was already lying in my closet since I do a lot of crafting.
It took me about an hour and a half to finish my cake. It turned out pretty good I think. The only bad thing is that my son hurt himself playing football in school so we never made it to the shower.
We made this diaper cake for my sister in law's baby shower and another one for my other sister in law that is pregnant too (one girl and one boy), and my husband and I are from Puerto Rico and we want to make a different and original gift. This diaper cake we made with Pampers and Huggies, size 1 (64 Pampers approx.)
The diaper cakes have 3 tiers and we put some Johnson & Johnson products, bear, baby bottle, and others items. If you want to view another one that we made you can visit at MySpace URL: http://www.myspace.com/misticwizard
